adders at the New Forest Reptile Centre

Adders

The open heaths of the New Forest are ideal basking grounds for adders.  The adder is the most commonly seen snake in the New Forest and Britain's only poisonous snake.  Adders are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.  Adders are active during the day, spending time basking until their body temperature is high enough to hunt for food.
