Chairman Julian Johnson
What’s your best childhood memory of the New Forest?
Walking from Sway to Wilverley Inclosure along an empty road, past Long Slade Bottom as far as the ‘Naked Man’- a skeleton of an old tree reputedly alive in William the Conqueror’s time.
Why is the New Forest so special for you?
It has to be the landscape and natural beauty, ancient woodland, wildlife and nature’s diversity. In contrast to the woodland we have a lovely stretch of coastline looking across to the Isle of Wight with spectacular views from Hurst Castle.
Where is your favourite place in the New Forest National Park?
The Beaulieu River has always been a personal favourite with its history and tradition, but looking out over Bramshaw Telegraph with its purple heather-covered heathland is a close contender.
How did you become a member?
I was a member of the New Forest Committee, the forerunner to the Authority, from 1993 to 2005 - when the National Park was formed. Then Wiltshire County Council nominated me to become a National Park Authority member because of my knowledge and interest.
What skills do you bring to the role?
I have 17 years in local government and have held positions at both regional and county level. I have been Chair of Wiltshire County Council and for some years chaired both the planning and transport committees of the South West Region. This experience of working with local authorities and Ministers is invaluable.
What do you hope to achieve as Chair?
I aim to make the New Forest one of the best National Park's in the country. This means working closely with our new Chief Executive, the staff and members and our many partners in the Forest. I would like more young people to appreciate and care for our open spaces and enjoy the outdoors.
What's your favourite part of the job?
Being out and about in the Forest making things happen. This could be helping local businesses or organisations through our Sustainable Development Fund, seeing school children benefit from their experience in the Forest or looking at conservation projects.
What is the least favourite part of the job?
Having to wrestle with budget cutbacks in an uncertain financial climate. My aim is to minimise the impact on the Forest and to work with our stakeholders and partners.
